What it is
A pre-notification is a message telling the payer the amount and date of an upcoming debit. The SEPA Core rulebook requires one before each collection.
When to send it
The default is at least 14 calendar days before the debit, unless you and the payer agree a different period — commonly set in your checkout or contract terms. For a pay-later order debited on day 30, sending the notice at checkout and again a few days before the debit works well.
What to include
- The amount to be debited
- The debit date
- Your creditor name and creditor identifier
- The mandate reference
- The order it relates to, and how to contact you
Why it reduces returns
Shoppers who know a debit is coming make sure the money is there, and recognise it on their statement instead of disputing it. A clear reminder a few days before day 30 is one of the cheapest ways to reduce failed debits.
