When a SEPA debit comes back, it carries an ISO 20022 reason code. These are the ones shops see most often.

Refunds versus returns

A return happens before or around settlement — the debit never really succeeds. A refund (MD06) happens after a successful debit, when the payer asks their bank for the money back. Under SEPA Core, payers can request a refund of an authorised debit within 8 weeks, without giving a reason.

Create your account, connect GoCardless and switch on pay later in your own checkout.
